Lake Country Fire Department resumes FireSmart green waste bin program

Becoming more FireSmart in Lake Country isn’t a one‑time task — it’s an ongoing community effort. From District staff and firefighters to neighbours, community groups, and government partners, everyone has a role to play. Most importantly, residents can make a real difference right at home.

To make it easier for residents to get started, the Lake Country Fire Department (LCFD) is helping remove one of the biggest barriers: green waste disposal. Thanks to a grant from the FireSmart Community Funding and Supports program, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and funded by the Province of BC, large Super Save green waste bins are now available for resident use at LCFD Station 71 in Winfield and Station 81 in Carr’s Landing.

Residents are invited to drop off green waste from their own properties:

  • Grass
  • Leaves
  • Hedge clippings
  • Tree prunings under 5 cm in circumference.

Collected material will be chipped and reused for trails and compost, turning yard clean‑up into a meaningful FireSmart action that benefits the whole community.

“We are grateful for the funding allocation from the Province that helps local governments build community resiliency through FireSmart planning and actions,” says Brent Penner, LCFD Deputy Fire Chief. “By taking action on steps to FireSmart their property, residents can dramatically increase their resistance to wildfire damage. The best part is, it’s surprisingly easy. The area closest to your home — and your home itself — is where small changes can have the biggest impact.

Every cleared yard, every thoughtful landscaping change, and every FireSmart upgrade helps protect our neighbourhoods and gives firefighters a better chance to defend homes during wildfire events. By taking action together, Lake Country residents are helping build a stronger, safer, and more resilient community.
