Property owners have until July 2 to claim the provincial Home Owner Grant and pay their property taxes to avoid a 10% penalty.
The Home Owner Grant is separate from the B.C. Speculation Tax. Applications must be submitted through the Provincial Government - not your local municipality.
Tips to save money and time:
- Claim your grant: The average homeowner saves $770 by claiming the Home Owner Grant through the B.C. government. Have your Social Insurance Number and property tax notice ready when applying.
- Avoid credit card fees: Pay by debit, online banking, cheque, or cash to avoid the 2% credit card transaction fee.
- Skip the line at Municipal Hall: Pay online through your bank or in person at your financial institution to avoid lineups.
- Plan ahead for the Canada Day holiday: To avoid late penalties, pay early and allow up to five business days for your bank to process your payment.
To avoid late fees, ensure both your grant application and property tax payment are submitted before July 2.
