Increase public safety by moving parked vehicles and trailers off road right-of-way

District news and public notices

In the interest of public safety, residents of Lake Country are being reminded that vehicles cannot be parked on public roads for more than 24-consecutive hours. The Highways Bylaw 1189, 2022 explains that the parking restriction includes recreational vehicles and trailers, in addition to all other vehicle types. Detached/unhitched trailers may not be parked on public roads for any length of time.

If your vehicle or RV is parked in the same spot on the public road right-of-way for over 24 hours, you will likely receive a warning notice from the Bylaw team. Their goal is to achieve voluntary compliance, and they may knock on your door to talk to you about the safety issue your vehicle or trailer is creating in the neighbourhood. Some residents have multiple vehicles, boat trailers and RVs parked on the road. Please take immediate action to move the vehicle to within your driveway on your private property, or make arrangements with an appropriate storage facility.

You may have thought that the extra area on the side of the traffic flow lane is part of your private property, but in most cases it is not. If you are unsure if your vehicle is parked on the public road or on your property – take a moment to review your property line shown in yellow on the District’s GIS mapping tool. It has been noted that a number of property owners have landscaped portions of the public road right-of-way or developed their own parking areas.  Most of these parking areas are not within the homeowner’s property and would be part of the 24-hour parking limit; and if action is not taken by the owner after a warning letter is provided, the vehicle may be ticketed or towed.

Enforcement of the Bylaw is done to maintain community safety, enhance site lines for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists and ensure there are minimal obstacles for effective snow removal, garbage collection and emergency response.

Questions or concerns about the bylaw and enforcement can be directed to bylaw@lakecountry.bc.ca or 250-766-6673.
