At 10a.m. Wednesday morning (April 1st) a unique gathering of volunteers including brawny hockey players, naturalists, and various walking groups will join forces for a huge clean-up of Mission Creek Regional Park. And they're challenging YOU to do the same, use 20 minutes of your day for some good old fashioned spring cleaning at your favorite park, stretch of roadway, neighborhood, school, or place of business.

It's all part of the Community 20 Minute Make Over sponsored by the Regional District's Waste Reduction Office, the official kick start to Community Cleanup Month which runs all of April. And for either the Makeover or Community Clean Ups in April, the Waste Reduction Office can supply your group with bags and gloves for a clean- up, and even arrange to pick up the litter you collect when you're done.

Waste Reduction Facilitator Rae Stewart says it's always inspiring to see what a difference we can make when we pitch in for as little as 20 minutes of our day. "These events are a great way to bring the community together to make a positive difference and make an impact. You know what they say, many hands make light work. We really want to showcase how easy it is for anyone, anywhere to get involved."

The cleanup crew on April 1st will consist of two teen hockey teams from the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy and their coaches, who will be joined by members of the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club, the Friends of the South Slopes, the TRACS walking group, plus various other walking groups that frequent the park on a regular basis. "The volunteers will be giving some TLC to parts of the Greenway and the area directly adjacent to Springfield Avenue. Mission Creek Park is one of the many jewels of our Regional Parks network. Because it's in the heart of the city, it's also one of the most well-travelled parks and highly visible. The last thing we want to see is a bunch of litter tarnishing its' natural beauty."

Irene Ferguson, Student Coordinator with the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy says the hockey boys are proud to be part of this years' Makeover. "Our organization has a long standing history of community involvement. This is the community our boys play in, naturally we want to give back in a positive way. The boys are looking forward to getting out and lending a hand April 1st.

Stewart adds, "Over the years, literally thousands of people have participated in 20 Minute Make Over and Community Clean up Month, from school groups to service organizations, church groups, families, co-workers, and friends. It's hugely inspiring to see that level of commitment!"
