‘HOW WE BEGAN’ LAKE COUNTRY - WINFIELD LIONS  1968 – 2018”

The idea of forming a Lions Club in Winfield was conceived by a pair of Lake Country residents, Ben Crooks and Peter Friedrich during a long drive wintery drive home from a Lions Club Meeting in Vernon.  With the help of good friends in the Vernon club, the first Winfield Lions Club meeting was held April 11, 1968 at Duck Lake Inn.  Some twenty interested persons attended and formed the nucleus of Lake Country’s first Service Club.

The Charter Night was held May 31, 1968 at the Winfield Memorial Hall. At this occasion, Ben Crooks was installed as the Winfield Lions Club first president.  The Lions Club has long been a supporter of Winfield Memorial Hall, but did not move into the Lion’s Den in the basement of the hall until 1988.

Many of the community features we now recognize as part of Lake Country were initiated by Winfield Lions over that period. A Woods Lake park later became part of Beasley Park.  The ball fields and original tennis courts at Jack Seaton were an early project.  The first buildings of Camp Winfield were completed by the Lions.  It is not just coincidence that the BC Lions Camp Winfield for Children – “to enable abilities” also celebrates 50 years this summer.

Lake Country Days, our first community celebration, owes much to the 1980 Lions Club.  In 1981, Winfield Lions made the first donation of $2,000 to the Senior Bussing Society, and contributes to this program to this day.  Winfield Lions sponsored the first GESS Dry Grad in 1989 with a Pancake Breakfast and the prize of a car.

The Winfield Lions and Fireman’s Bonspiel was a major fundraising event from 1980 to 2014 which raised funds to support our community halls, youth soccer and hockey teams, and GESS Graduation Bursaries.

The first Big Band Dance in 1988 has evolved into “Pasta and Blues” and “Dreamland Jazzfest” All the Lions events which are have been so generously supported by the small business in our community have generated funds which have been put back directly to our community.  We serve.

In 1968 when the minimum wage was $1.68 and gasoline

cost 34 cents per gallon, Lions raised funds through firewood sales.

THE LIONS TRADITION CONTINUES

In 1996 when the District of Lake Country was formed, the local Lions club changed their identity to Lake Country-Winfield Lions.  That change brought new energy to the club.  Donations to the Winfield Hall Building Fund, moving the Wentworth Cabin to the Okanagan Centre Museum, and bringing the Cenotaph Park to reality began at that time.

The Legacy project for the 50th year was refurbishing the roof of the gazebo and placing two memorial benches, one celebrating Canada 150 and a second celebrating LCI 100th year was completed in the fall of 2017.  The

Winfield Memorial Park on Main Street is also were the community celebrates the Christmas Light-up each year.

In 1998, the Lake Country-Winfield Lions held their largest single fundraising event, the raffle of a Chrysler and donated $11,500 to Easter Seal Camp Winfield.  The Harlem Ambassadors Basketball game in April 2017 to support Camp Winfield and GESS Sports programs almost reached that mark.

In 2000 Lake Country-Winfield Lions accepted the inaugural Order of Lake Country award in recognition as top club for the year.  That service to the community continues with the part the Lions play at the Halloween Bonfire, the Easter Egg Hunt and the contributions made to our parks; such as benches in Okanagan Centre and Oyama, and sunshades at Swalwell Park.
