Oyama Water Quality Issues Addressed
(August 27, 2010 Media Release)

The District of Lake Country utilizes 4 surface water sources. The upland Drinking water reservoirs are Beaver (Swalwell) Lake  and Oyama Lake and the lower elevation reservoirs are Okanagan Lake (2 intakes) and Kalamalka Lake (1 intake).

The raw water sources are sampled for nutrients, physical water chemistry and bacteriological content.

The chlorinated distribution systems are closely monitored to ensure physical water chemistry is within the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines and that adequate disinfection levels are maintained throughout the systems. Bacteriological samples (total coliforms and E.coli) are regularly collected as per Schedule B of the Drinking Water Protection Act.

Water Boiling Guidelines

Water intended for the following uses should be boiled for one minute:
  • Drinking
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Beverages or ice
  • Brushing teeth

Boiled water should then be refrigerated in a clean, sealed container.  You may also choose bottled or distilled water.  For turbidity-related advisories/notices only, water may be filtered through a well-maintained treatment device can be used.  Water filters that meet the minimum requirement should have the designation "Absolute one micron Certified NSF Standard #53" or better.
